KAMAZ AND MOSCOW’S GOVERNMENT LAUNCHED PRODUCTION OF MOSKVICH CARS
23 November 2022
General Director of KAMAZ Sergey Kogogin has taken part in a ceremony of launching the Moscow Automobile Plant Moskvich on November 23 in Moscow. KAMAZ PTC is a technology partner of the project.
In 2023-2024, it is planned to carry out SKD assembly with the growing involvement of local suppliers. The first Moskvich cars will come off the production line in December 2022. The plant expects to produce 600 cars by the end of 2022, of which 400 will be ICEVs and 200 EVs. The Moskvich cars should be available to buy in Russia in December 2022. The first model of the revived brand to come off the line is the present-day, comfortable, high-quality and wreck-resistant car Moskvich 3.
Moscow’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin decided in May 2022 to relaunch the Moskvich car production at the plant, as a move to preserve its unique workforce. In July, KAMAZ PTC and the Government of Moscow signed an agreement to develop the passenger automotive transport and to manufacture Russian electric vehicles. It was a start of a new period in the history of the plant, and a desirable growth vector was mapped out.
In record-breaking time, the Moscow Automobile Plant Moskvich resumed work. It became the first Russian enterprise which in the current economy swiftly launched production and established logistics chains. This became possible thanks to assistance from the technology partner with technical know-how and experience in the development of the city electric transport.
“KAMAZ has successful experience of anti-crisis management and also SKD vehicle assembly with the subsequent growing involvement of local suppliers. Besides, thanks to our high-class design and engineering school created for the latest years, the company is one of the Russian leaders in the development and production of commercial transport, electric transport and self-driving innovative vehicles, which will also contribute to the revival of Moskvich. We are glad that KAMAZ’s know-how will help further develop the Russian auto industry, following the global trend towards high-tech and eco-friendly cars,” commented General Director of KAMAZ PTC Sergey Kogogin.
As part of the agreement with KAMAZ, an eight-year development strategy for the plant was developed, according to which production at the Moskvich plant would be relaunched in three stages. Today the production has been launched as part of the first stage: new supply chains were established and SKD assembly of Moskvich 3 cars and electric vehicles with the growing involvement of local suppliers was launched in conjunction with KAMAZ. Besides, the development of the Russian new universal platform of the domestically-produced electric car and production of key auto components is underway, thanks to the all-round support from the Russian Government.
In the second stage, from 2024, CKD will begin in parallel with SKD, and the level of localization will increase by attracting a pool of local suppliers with components like body parts, power controls, brake systems and others localized in Russia. The third stage is for the launch of a Russian electric car from domestic components on its own universal platform – electric motor, batteries, gearbox.
As for production volumes, it is expected that in 2023 at least 50,000 cars will be SKD assembled, 10,000 of which will be electric, followed by 100,000, a fifth of which will be electric, in 2024. Half of this volume will be SKD assembled, another half will be CKD assembled.
In view of the global trend towards innovative automobile engineering and eco-friendly future, as well as a growing demand for electric cars, the priority of the Moskvich plant is to produce comfortable, present-day, wreck-resistant electric cars to be used as personal and public transport means (taxi, carsharing).
